She has experienced disability from a variety of areas; as an individual, as caregiver and as a parent of individuals with disabilities. Her career includes roles as a Chief Disability Officer, founding chair of Disability:IN and as a Presidential Appointee to the National Council on Disability.

With over 27 years in public education, Dr. Gatling has served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, executive director of special and gifted programs, and executive director of professional learning in various school divisions in Hampton Roads. During the Northam Administration (Virginia), she was appointed to the task force on Culturally Responsive Practices. She currently serves on the Task Force for Racial Equity at James Madison University.

Gatling has over 20 years of experience from William & Mary, leading the institution’s equal opportunity and then diversity & inclusion efforts. She then served the university as an Employment and Policy Analyst before taking her expertise to lead diversity efforts for the Space Telescope Science Institute. She holds a certificate in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Workplace.
